Marine Institute, Ireland

Acronym: MI

Country: Ireland

Role in SEAS-ERA: The MI will lead the strategic analysis in the Atlantic region (Task 6.1), together with the MB-ESF. They will also contribute to WP1, WP2 and WP3.

The Marine Institute is the national Irish agency with the general remit to: "undertake, co-ordinate, promote and assist in marine research and development and to provide such services related to marine research and development, that in the opinion of the Institute will promote economic development, create employment and protect the environment" (Marine Institute Act,1991).

The Marine Institute is unique in Europe in that it has three functions, not normally associated with a single agency, namely that of:

  • A Regulatory Agency: providing scientific advice, data and assessments in support of national legislation, EU Policies (e.g. Common Fisheries Policy) and Directives (e.g. Marine Strategy Framework Directive, Shellfish Waters Directive, etc).
  • A Research Performer (RPO): carrying out basic and applied research.
  • A Research Funding Organisation (RFO): managing and implementing a national, competitive marine research funding programme.

The Marine Institute - Sea Change Management Unit (SCMU) will be the Irish partner in the SEAS ERA-Net in its capacity as a Research Funding Organisation (RFO). The Sea Change Management Unit (SCMU) manages and implements the Marine Research Sub-Measure of the National Development Plan (2007-2013) and co-ordinates the Sea Change Strategy (A Marine Knowledge, Research and Innovation Strategy for Ireland 2007-2013) which is the marine component of the National Strategy for Science Technology and Innovation (2006-2013).
